Dunsandel Paintings: A lasting legacy of the sacrifice of young men during the First World War was the shrinking of small town communities within New Zealand.
This instigated a societal change for women who had been brought up to believe in the institution and sanctity of marriage and family as their sole right.
For some it offered freedom from the constraints of expected gender roles. For most it was the ultimate redundancy.
